In a remarkable milestone, Saudi Arabia has been unanimously approved as an International Search and Examination Authority. This significant decision was made during the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO in July 2023. The Saudi Intellectual Property Authority (SAIP) can now take on the prestigious roles of an International Search Authority (ISA) and International Preliminary Examination Authority (IPEA).

With this approval, SAIP can now provide patent search and examination services for applications filed through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), benefiting applicants from Arabic-speaking countries who can designate SAIP as the ISA. This move is expected to enhance Saudi Arabia’s position on the Global Innovation Index (GII) and support the country’s Vision 2030, promoting innovation, technology transfer, and economic growth.

By becoming an ISA and IPEA, SAIP aims to foster a culture of innovation, attract foreign investment, and protect intellectual property rights efficiently. This achievement marks a new era for Saudi Arabia’s innovation ecosystem and demonstrates its commitment to being a leading authority in intellectual property rights.

Saudi Arabia’s recognition as an International Search and Examination Authority is a significant step towards creating an inclusive and innovative environment, driving the nation’s progress and development on the global stage.
