Bahrain and China have inaugurated a pioneering initiative, the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) pilot program, aimed at accelerating patent examination and fostering innovation collaboration between the two nations.

On May 1, 2024, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the Bahrain Ministry for Industry and Commerce (MOIC) officially commenced their Memorandum of Understanding on the Patent Prosecution Highway Pilot Program. This landmark agreement is set to span five years, concluding on April 30, 2029.

The essence of the PPH pilot program lies in its ability to expedite patent prosecution processes. Under this framework, applicants who have already received a favorable decision on their patent claims from either MOIC or CNIPA can request accelerated examination of corresponding claims at the other office. This reciprocal recognition allows both administrations to capitalize on each other’s previous examination results, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing redundancy in the patent review process.
